The Catechism of the Catholic Church

The recently promulgated Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is a major milestone of the renewal of the Church in our times. As a direct result of Vatican II, Rome, in collaboration with all the bishops around the world, determined to revise the liturgy, canon law, and the presentation of the Gospel to better serve contemporary needs. The liturgy was slowly revised from 1967 to 1978, the revised Canon Law was promulgated in 1983 (Eastern Rites – 1990), and the “Universal Catechism”, as it is now called, was promulgated in 1992, the Latin “typical” edition officially revised in 1997. Not since the Council of Trent has such a sweeping renewal been brought about in the Church by the Holy Spirit.

And as that council was followed in succeeding years by an abundance of saintly men and women, we pray for a similar outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon us. As a result of the Council of Trent, religious life was renewed with new forms, entering its golden age. After Vatican II, some have speculated that this is the age of the laity, where the laity will be led by the Holy Spirit to go out into the world in a “New Evangelization.” God willing, may this web page for the study of the Catechism bring us closer to God and help equip us for this mission.
